Abstract :
The objective of this study is to analyze the knowledge, practices, perceptions and experiences of members of the Matamba community in relation to the use of swamp salt and its effects on the health of users. Its approach is based on a qualitative analysis through interviews based on an open questionnaire addressed to 4 representative categories of members of the Matamba community who usually use this swamp salt commonly called «mukela wa kabamba». Why does this people remain attached to the consumption of this local salt despite the presence of table salt in this community? As a result, most of the accounts of our interviewees affirm that it is because of its multiple uses: ingredients, medicine, traditional rites, breeding and its natural and gentle character. The ingenious knowledge of the ancestors on the discovery of this medicinal product and their salutary choice as a biological contribution, i.e. nutritional, medical, social and symbolic, have made it appreciated to the detriment of table salt. In conclusion, «mukela wa kabamba» has many of the therapeutic properties that have made it important in traditional medicine for centuries according to members of the community, but salt characterization and epidemiological studies deserve to be carried out to confirm these statements.
