Abstract :

Presented to the public on 13 February 2026, the song Franc Congolais Nkolo Mabele, composed by Souzy Kaseya at the initiative of the Central Bank of the Congo and performed by several renowned Congolese artists, represents an original approach to culturally grounded monetary communication. This study examines the song as a discursive instrument for promoting the national currency and symbolically building monetary trust. It adopts an abductive qualitative approach combining a thematic content analysis of the song with a structured comparison of several international experiences in cultural and financial communication. The corpus is coded along six dimensions: monetary identity and sovereignty, monetary trust, economic patriotism, intended monetary behaviours, economic education, and cultural and emotional drivers. The findings reveal a discursive architecture that moves from identity-based anchoring and the symbolic valorisation of the Congolese franc to explicit prescriptions regarding the use of the national currency, particularly for payments, sales, savings, and credit. They further show how musical discourse combines identity-based, affective, cognitive, and prescriptive registers to translate the symbolic valorisation of the currency into a favourable disposition towards its use. Drawing on these findings and insights from monetary economics, the sociology of music, behavioural economics, and public communication, the article contributes to the development of a cultural theory of monetary communication. It argues that a culturally grounded symbolic strategy can, provided that macroeconomic fundamentals are consistent, contribute to strengthening trust in and favourable dispositions towards the national currency, without such a contribution being interpreted, given the available evidence, as a demonstrated causal effect on its actual use or on de-dollarisation
