Abstract :
This article examines the relationship between Metropolitan French and two of its most dynamic African varieties: Congolese French and Ivorian French. Drawing on a sociolinguistic and glottopolitical approach, it questions the relevance of the «suffragan» metaphor—derived from ecclesiastical terminology— in describing the historically established hierarchical relationship between the Hexagonal norm and African usage. The analysis demonstrates that, far from being mere peripheral offshoots, the Congolese and Ivorian varieties are characterized by their own dynamics, lexical, syntactic, and pragmatic innovations, and a sociolinguistic legitimacy rooted in local realities.
