Abstract :
By adopting a multidimensional approach that, following Wélé (2009) and Afef (2019), simultaneously integrates internal and external governance mechanisms, this article aims to assess the impact of a composite governance quality index on the economic and social performance of COOPECs, and vice versa. The methodology is based on a sample of 95 COOPECs observed over the 2014–2017 period. The results show that governance quality has a positive and significant effect on COOPEC efficiency, as measured using the Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) method. They also indicate that certain institutional characteristics—such as location, organizational structure, and financial discipline—significantly influence performance. The study thus confirms the importance of integrated governance tailored to the institutional context for strengthening the viability of financial cooperatives.
